Down the Sentimenal Trail

This morning I have been remembering all the little things that bring you back. Sweep you away into a world you once lived, but have forgotten. Give you that "tickle belly" and make you all warm inside. I thought it would be fun to write down some stories, sounds, smells, anything that are sentimental to me. Just silly randomness about my personal self!

Cigarettes and Coffee
Now that's a funny thing to be sentimental about, isn't it? But the smell of those two all mingled together really does bring me back to my childhood.
As a little girl, from as far back as I can remember, I spent much of my life at my Great- Aunt and Uncle's house. Auntie smoked and drank coffee while sitting on her front porch and I remember always telling her "You smell like Grandma."
My Grandma S. lives 3,000 miles away so I didn't get to see her as much as her sister, but they both had the same smell. I don't smoke and probably never will, but the smell brings me back through the years!

Lilacs
Mmm... have you ever smelt the air when a breeze sweeps through the Lilac tree's? You can almost taste the sweetness on your tongue! Grandma W. had beautiful Lilac tree's in what we called "the Jungle". A center section in the driveway of plants. I loved to pick those beautiful purple flowers and rush to share them with Grandma or Mommy!

Periwinkle
Grandma also had a patch of Periwinkle growing along the railings outside their house. We used to pick handfuls of those pretty little things. I still love the sight of them and they will always remind me of Grandma.

Gasoline
Yes, the smell of gasoline. We used to spend much of our time at the Ranch on four wheeler's and I did my fair share of putting gas into them! Whenever I smell it I say, "Mm... smells like the Ranch."

Diesel Pick-Ups
Grandpa had a green diesel pick-up that was very loud to my little ears! The sound of them running also remind me of the Ranch.

Four Wheelers
Yep, also another Ranch memory! The sound of four wheeler's running is a lovely sound. But did we ever get impatient sitting on those things waiting for the adults to take us on a long ride through the mountains!

Guitar strumming
Back when I was real young, my Uncle Casey used to strum on the guitar while everyone sat around and visited. People would be talking, kids laughing, and everything was loud and happy.
I remember spending time at my Uncle Tim's house and him and Uncle Casey would strum a little too. Sometimes a cousin would join in.
Great-Uncle O'Neil also used to play and sing!
Whenever I hear that gentle quiet guitar, I'm brought back to when I was "knee high to a grasshopper". I loved curling up on the couch with my head in someone's lap and falling asleep to music and laughter.

Banana Bread
Mommy didn't like making banana bread, so she always did Zucchini. But Banana bread was (and still is!) my ultimate favorite.
Grandma used to make it and I loved when she'd let me have a slice all warm from the oven. Butter melting down the sides.
I remember Auntie Marita calling our house just up the hill and telling me there was Banana bread made. She brought me up a slice to share with her.
"You want butter on yours, right?"

Roast and Potatoes
In our family, roast and potatoes are all you really need to be happy in life!
I still love the smell of a roast in the oven, slowly cooking all day.
I remember Mommy would put one going on Sunday morning. I couldn't wait to get home from church! The house would be all warm and smell delicious. And it didn't taste too bad going into hungry mouths either!

Mommy and Daddy reading
I can't remember the first time my Mom read out loud to me from "Little House in the Big Woods". She just always has. I still love listening to Laura's story be read aloud.
The first book I remember my Dad reading aloud to me was "Down the Long Hills" by Louis L'Amour. Other's he would go on to read were the "Little Britches" books, and "Indian in the Cupboard" series.

Charley Pride
For as long as I can remember, we had an old country CD of Charley Pride. I remember listening to it on the road. His voice reminds me of being young!

Shall we gather at the River? - Hymn
I absolutely love the old Hymns. They're uplifting and beautiful. But I have a few special ones. For some reason, "Shall we gather at the River" is the one that brings me back the most! I remember listening to my Uncle Casey sing it on a CD we had. We also had it by Andy Griffith!
I can still see one exact moment headed to the Ranch. Listening to Casey and watching the Columbia River flash by.

The Shadow Riders
Yes, call me strange, but that good ole movie just takes me back. I can't remember the first time I watched it, I just know I always loved it.
To this day the sound of Tom Selleck's voice just makes me feel young again.
Anyone who knows me, can tell you I also have my "favorite part". A moment where it shows scene's of the characters "Mack" and "Dal" riding home from the war and a fiddle is playing! I get goose bumps just thinking about it. That music is what really is sentimental to me! You've got to hear it someday.

The Man from Snowy River
Yes, also another movie, this one's soundtrack makes me all warm inside. We used to LOVE this movie and LaKaysha's hero was the main character. She used to ride her little pink trike, pretend to be throwing a whip, and insist she was "Jim Craig".
I still listen to the theme song and other songs that are played through out this film.

Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier!
Now, what can I say about Davy? My first hero, my first love. I was his biggest fan!
I wanted to be just like him and could watch his movies all day long! I still enjoy them and anything to do with him.

Winnie-the-Pooh
Who doesn't love ole Pooh Bear? I was obsessed when I was young and wanted anything to do with "Pooh". My favorite dress was a soft silky purple one that had images of Pooh scattered all over it.
Whenever I hear "Deep in the Hundred-Acre Woods, where Christopher Robin plays..." I almost melt. My very favorite's are the first "original" Pooh films and just have to smile when I hear that little voice "Oh, stuff and fluff."

Bath Time
Say, what? Bath time? Now that's a weird thing to be all sentimental about!
But no matter what, I am.
I still love when little's get their baths. All clean and soft into their pajama's. Smelling of soap and hair combed straight back.
Bath time was the highlight of my life as a little girl! I wanted to spend hours playing in the tub! My Mom would lay a towel down so we didn't soak the floor, and I would carry a stack of "little golden books" into the bathroom for her to read to us while we played with our foam stickers.
The water would be scorching hot and it would take a bit for us to finally get in.
Grandma used to give me baths too, so maybe that's why they seem so special to me. She'd gently wash my hair and say "Scrub, a dub, dub, three men in a tub" and play with my toes rhyming
"This little piggy went to the market. This little piggy stayed home. This little piggy had roast beef, and this little piggy had none. And this little piggy cried wee, wee, wee all the way home!"

By The Book Tag

I was tagged by Marita at When I Hear Music for the "by the book" tag, so here it goes.

What Book Is On Your Nightstand Now?
Well, I don't have a nightstand at this moment in my life, though I do have a dresser! It actually does have a book on it, surprisingly! I've been meaning to put it away.
"Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen.
I started reading this a few months ago for the first time and never completed it. I haven't been doing much reading lately!

What Was the Last Truly Great Book You Read?
Oh boy! The last "truly great book" I have read? Well as I said above, its been a long time since I sat down and enjoyed a book! I am not sure what I would consider great that I read more recent?
I guess the last book I finished and really enjoyed was probably "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte.
I was trying to get into the habit of reading the classics for awhile there, if you can't tell!
Though at times I would be like "huh?" and not have a clue what was going on in the chapter, I still enjoyed it. The story line is somewhat "iffy" (I mean come on! What kind of husband locks his mentally deranged wife in the attic and is willing to marry a governess who is twenty years his senor with a clean conscious?) but all in all a good read! Some parts were "okay, your weird" but, it was interesting.

I guess I could add another book I recently finished was "Bendigo Shafter" by Louis L'Amour. I've read it dozens of times but I still love it! I would even consider it greater than "Jane Eyre" (by far!). But since I have read it so many times and "Jane Eyre" was my first time, I listed it first.
"Bendigo Shafter" really is a great book and I will be reading it dozens of more times in the years to come!

If You Could Meet Any Writer - Dead or Alive - Who Would It Be? And What Would You Want To Know?
Definitely without question, Laura Ingalls Wilder! I would love to hear first hand her accounts of growing up on the American prairie, what Pa's fiddle really sounded like, and how good those heart shaped cakes really tasted.  And much more!

What Books Might We Be Surprised to Find On Your Shelves?
Hm... you'd probably be better at answering this than myself? Maybe the "Boxcar Children" series by Gertrude Chandler Warner. I have dozens of those! I don't read them anymore but I loved them when I was younger.

One more you might find surprising could be "The Journal's of Lewis and Clark" while they traveled with the Corpse of Discovery. Yes, I have read it and yes, I enjoyed it! I have a soft spot for those two men.

How Do You Organize Your Personal Library?
Well sadly my books have been packed in a box for over nine months! I miss them! But when I did have them on shelves it was my "romance" starting with the Love Comes Softly series. Next would probably be my "history" style books like bio's and journals. Then last would be my children books.

What Book Have You Always Meant to Read But Haven't Got Around Yet?
"Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo. (Though I wouldn't say "always". I hadn't heard of it until last year! But I have been meaning to ever since.) I received it for Christmas from a friend and though I tried to read it once I never even finished the first chapter. It's just so big! And so... confusing.

Anything You Feel Embarrassed Never to Have Read?
Maybe "Sherlock Holmes" Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? I wouldn't say I am "embarrassed" but since many in my family have read them and loved them you might be surprised I haven't! I don't even know why? Maybe that will be next on my list.

Disappointing, Overrated, Just Not Good: What Book Did You Feel You Are Supposed to Like But Didn't?
Probably "Stepping Heavenward" by Elizabeth Prentiss. (Sorry Marita!). I just didn't like it! But like I said to her, maybe I need to sit down with a different mind set? I read it thinking it would be an entertaining story. Instead it depressed me beyond anything. I couldn't handle it anymore and never did finish it.
Another would be the "Elsie Dinsmore" series by Martha Finley. (Sorry to those who like those books! I know many who do! Each to their own, right?) I read only one (Elsie's Impossible Choice) for a school project and it scarred me for life! I was eleven years old. Maybe it was because my Grandma had died just a few months before? I don't know, but all I remember is wanting to just vanish from the earth. I hid under my teachers desk and thought my heart would burst from holding the sobs back. I remember vowing to myself "Never, ever again!" I refused to even look at those books after that. It's been nine years now and I have yet to even hold another one in my hand.
Just looking at the cover below brings back those awful feelings and makes me shutter... it's really strange I know!
I have come to the conclusion that your circumstances in life have a great deal in your book enjoyment!

Do You Remember the Last Book You Put Down Without Finishing?
As I said at the beginning of this post, that would be "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen. It wasn't because I wasn't enjoying it. In fact, I was very much! But life got busy and it's just one of those books you can't easily jump back into. It's written in a rather old way and can be hard to understand at times.

What Kind Of Stories Are You Drawn To? Any You Stay Clear Of?
Drawn to? Hm... probably anything during the pioneer era. I think I got that love from my Mom. I actually even went through a time where I thought that's all anyone read! Until someone pointed out that was all the kind of books we owned. I was like "Isn't that all anyone reads?"
Or any of the classics like the "Anne of Green Gables" series by L.M. Montgomery, "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott, and the "Little House" series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
I also enjoy books based in the Amish!
Stay clear of? Like Marita said, anything that has something against God's Word.
Also, modern day romances, vampire books, or anything modern really. I've never been into books that place in "today". I also have never been too interested in anything medieval or swords. Not sure why! Maybe because I grew up with Laura and Louis L'Amour's? When the hero picks up a sword and wears tin rather than a Winchester and cowboy boots I'm just like "nope. Not for me."

If You Could Require The President to Read One Book, What Would It Be?
Hands down, the Bible!!

What Do You Plan to Read Next?
I've been wanting to re-read "Pioneer Girl" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Maybe I'll change my priorities one of these days and start reading again!
Well, there you have it! My "by the book tag". Hope you enjoyed it!

Wait I say on the LORD

Hey everyone. I've been somewhat quiet on the blog lately if you couldn't tell!

I have been going through some of my own personal struggles the past few weeks and have not been in much of the mood to do any blogging. Life kind of went on hold and I was just breathing day in and day out. I even stopped dreaming on Pinterest! (I used to go on there daily dreaming about my wedding and home)
The past few days have been better and I have been going on there more. It feels good. I now browse ideas for my dear friends bedroom that she is slowly trying to decorate. I love the bedding her and her hubby recently bought! It's so soft and feminine! (That was a random fact, eh?)

My parents and two youngest siblings went to Texas for ten days so it was just me and the two sisters at home! It was nice but I missed them and am thankful they are all safely back home!
It feels like we were busy the whole time they were gone and yet I don't know what we even did? I did my regular work of cleaning and folding clothes at Mollie's and we went to church on Sunday. I also babysat over night for my aunt with two other aunts on the weekend! Maybe that's why it felt busier?
The babysitting went well! It was our first time watching Abigail over night so I was a little nervous. Abi did awesome for us though and for that I am very thankful!

Just a few pictures from babysitting! I actually didn't take near as many as I usually do.

These two pictures are from Sunday!

A few things I learned the past week or so:

To be more open with my emotions and feelings to myself, and others. And to not be ashamed of them.

I have people who care all around me with listening ears and open arms.

God sometimes allows a door to be opened just to let you know it should be closed.

The sun will come out tomorrow.
"The sun'll come out tomorrow. So ya gotta hang on 'till tomorrow."

I may feel alone but I never truly am.
"When my steps are lost and desperate for a guide, I can feel His touch, a soothing presence by my side. Alone, yet not alone. Not forsaken when on my own. I can lean upon His arm, and be lifted up from harm. If I stumble, or if I'm thrown, I'm alone, yet not alone."

God knows best. His plan is perfect.

All we need in life is Jesus. All else is a blessing to be taken humbly and thankfully.

Take the world but give me Jesus. You're the treasure in this life. Take the world but give me Jesus is my cry. Now I've seen you as the Saviour I will leave the rest behind.Take the world but give me Jesus is my cry."

Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart : wait, I say, on the Lord. Psalm 27:14
